How to Decide When to Submit an Invention

Whenever you have research results that may have a commercial potential, it is recommended that you submit an Invention Disclosure Form to the OTL or contact us at 650-723-0651 or at otl@stanford.edu for consultation. In order to preserve potential patent rights, we strongly encourage inventors to disclose their invention as early as possible in the inventive process and before a public disclosure of your inventions or results. Public disclosures include, but are not limited to, journal and website publications, presentations at conferences or seminars (including open seminars at Stanford), posters, dissertations or master theses, pre-prints, and abstract publications. If you plan to have any public disclosure in the near future, please directly reach out to the Licensing Manager that you work with and discuss the next viable steps as soon as possible.
