DesRhex: Corneal Endothelial Transplant Surgical Device
A microsurgical tool that will allow eye surgeons to perform corneal endothelial transplants with more ease, accuracy and consistency.
About the Technology
DesRhex is a cutting-edge surgical instrument revolutionizing corneal endothelial procedures requiring descemetorhexis, such as DMEK, DSAEK/DSEK, and DSO/DWEK. These surgeries are used to treat conditions including endothelial dystrophies (such Fuchs’) and pseudophakic bullous keratopathy (PBK). Our device is designed to create circular descemetorhexis at the appropriate anatomic location. By doing so, DesRhex will minimize surgical complications and increase patient recovery time.
Corneal endothelial disease affects over 10% of individuals over 40 years old in the United States, with prevalence increasing with age or history of eye surgery. Our primary aim is to expand access to corneal endothelial surgeries for all patients and ophthalmic surgeons.
Originating from Stanford University's Byers Eye Institute, DesRhex has garnered support from various internal research grants. HIT Fund support from Stanford’s OTL will assist in the development of this technology. It has also received early regulatory feedback through the FDA's Q-Submission Program, expediting future clinical development.
