HIT Fund Lab to Market Seminar Series: Open Source Considerations
Isaac Fine, a partner with KPPB, shared his insights today with Stanford HIT Fund awardees and the broader Stanford community about open source considerations when developing a software project with commercial potential. His presentation addressed open-source challenges, risks associated with coding co-pilots, and machine learning innovations, and touched on the following topics:
- Different OSS licenses and their terms
- Considerations when incorporating OSS in projects planned for commercialization
- Considerations when open sourcing your own code
- Risks of using LLMs for generating code for commercialization
- Data providence – collection, storage, and use
- Commercialization strategies in view of publication requirements
Isaac's practice at KPPB focuses on university and venture-capital-backed startups as well as IP licensing and branding. In his academic life, Isaac worked at several labs focusing on bioinformatics and evolutionary biology. His background in computer science and biology has led to a robust focus on personalized medicine, medical devices, image processing, and consumer electronics. Isaac also represents leading academic institutions, including Stanford, UCLA, CalTech, and JPL.
